Public Lands Agencies U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Department of Defense US Army Corps of Engineers The Corps of Engineers administers approximately 11.7 million acres of public land and water throughout the U.S. It is the largest provider of water-based recreation; 94 percent of its 459 lakes are within a two-hour drive of a major metropolitan area. The Corps' lakes include 490 recreation areas; more than half of these are managed directly by the agency.
